- Rehmannia has been used extensively in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Although thorough clinical trials are lacking, rehmannia has been used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, urticaria (hives), and chronic nephritis (kidney inflammation) in Chinese studies. Rehmannia may also be used to prevent the suppressive effects of corticosteroid (steroid) drugs.
- Rehmannia looks promising in treating aplastic anemia, mitigating side-effects of chemotherapeutic agents and HIV medications, curing obdurate eczema (dry skin), relieving pain from lung or bone cancer or disc protrusion, and helping ameliorate lupus nephritis (kidney inflammation) and type 2 diabetes with hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol). However, presently, there are no high-quality, large randomized, controlled trials supporting the efficacy of rehmannia for any of these indications.
Diabetes: Since rehmannia might affect blood sugar levels, people with diabetes should avoid or be very cautious about taking rehmannia. If you have diabetes and take rehmannia, monitor your blood sugar carefully.
Surgery: Because rehmannia might affect blood glucose levels, it might interfere with blood sugar control during and after surgery. Stop using rehmannia at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.
No serious adverse effects documented when taken at the recommended dosage.
Some cases of mild gastrointestinal upset, nausea, gas diarrhea, vertigo, allergies have been reported.
Medications for diabetes (Antidiabetic drugs) interacts with REHMANNIA
Rehmannia might decrease blood sugar. There is concern that taking rehmannia with other medications for diabetes might cause blood sugar to decrease too much. Monitor your blood sugar closely. The dose of your diabetes medication might need to be changed. Some medications used for diabetes include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTabs, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), glipizide (Glucotrol), tolbutamide (Orinase), and others.
