Bacopa also known as the 'herb of grace' or 'brahmi' is a plant that has been used in traditional Indian medicine (Ayurveda).
Bacopa is commonly used for Alzheimer's Disease, improving memory, anxiety and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among many other uses.
Dosage:
5-13 ml per day in small amount water/juice
Studies show that it can take 5-12 weeks of continual use for benefits on cognitive function to become apparent. Acute effects may be possible but there is less evidence to be certain on this.
Safety Concerns:
Information from traditional sources suggests that bacopa is well tolerated when taken at the recommended dosage and the most common side effects relate to gastrointestinal disturbances which are mild and reversible, such as nausea, frequent bowel motions and abdominal cramping.
Adverse reactions:
The most common side effects are minor gastrointestinal disturbances, nausea, abdominal cramps, increased stool frequency and diarrhea.
Drug Interactions:
Cholinergic drugs
Serotonergic drugs - serotonergic activity has been identified for bacopa extracts, therefore there is a theoretical increased risk of serotonin syndrome when bacopa is used with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor.
