Most licorice root grows in Greece, Turkey and Asia. Centuries ago, licorice root was used for stomach inflammation and upper respiratory problems.

Today people use licorice root for digestive problems, adrenal support, menopausal symptoms, cough, bacterial and viral infections.


2-4 ml x 3 daily in a small amount of water/juice

Safety Concerns:
Has the potential to reduce potassium levels and raise blood pressure
Do not use if you have high blood pressure/ diagnosed hypertension.

Do not use if you are prone to fluid retention 

Contraindicated in hypotonia, severe renal insufficiency, hypokalaemia (potassium deficiency), liver cirrhosis and cholestatic liver disease.

May lower testosterone levels in men. Do not use if you have a history of impotence, decreased libido or infertility. 

Safety in pregnancy is not known. Avoid use

Adverse reactions:

Has the potential to increase blood pressure

May retain sodium

Hypokalemia - may lower levels of potassium. 

May cause oedema 

Thrombocytopenia - one case reported

May lower testosterone

May increase side effects of the oral contraceptive pill

Drug Interactions:

  • Acetylsalicylic acid and other gastro-irritant anti-inflammatory drugs : potentially beneficial interaction. Use high doses in caution. 
  • Methotrexate - Do not use concurrently. Can cause toxicity. 
  • Anticoagulants/antiplatelets : Avoid blood thinning medication if on any blood thinning medication 
  • Antihypertensives : Do not use licorice if you have high blood pressure especially for longer than 2 weeks.
  • Chemotherapy (paclitaxel and vinblastine) increased effect do not use concurrently.
  • Cimetidine and other H2 antagonists : Potentially beneficial only use under the supervision of doctor and naturopath.
  • Corticosteroids: Additive effects. Caution. Use under doctor/naturopath supervision.
  • Cyclosporin - reduced bioavailability do not use licorice. 
  • Diclofenac sodium (NSAID) - beneficial effect use under supervision of naturopath/doctor.
  • Digoxin - Do not use this drug with licorice. Toxicity may occur.
  • Diuretics - Avoid long term use of diuretics and licorice together do not use concurrently.
  • Oral contraceptive pill - Increased risk of side effects do not use concurrently.
  • Potassium - Beneficial to supplement with potassium if on licorice long term. 
  • Testosterone - Licorice may decrease testosterone levels.
