Andrographis has been used in traditional medicine systems in many countries.
It has been included in the pharmacopoeia of India, Korea and China.
It is considered a 'cold' herb in Chinese Medicine and is used to rid the body of heat in fevers and acute infections and to dispel toxins from the body.
In Ayurvedic medicine it is used as a a bitter tonic, to stimulate digestion as well as for diabetes and hepatitis.
It is commonly used to treat liver conditions. In recent years, Andrographis has gained popularity in Western countries as a treatment for upper respiratory tract infections and influenza.
Dosage:
2.5-5ml per day in small amount water/juice
Safety Concerns:
Andrographis is not recommended in pregnancy or lactation. This herb is well tolerated but may interact with certain medications. (See drug interactions below).
Avoid Andrographis use 1 week before any surgery.
Adverse reactions:
Generally well tolerated with adverse effects infrequent and mild when taken at the recommended dosage.
Drug Interactions:
Anticoagulants - Increased risk of bruising and bleeding is possible due to andrographis inhibiting PAF- induced platelet aggregation.
Antiplatelet drugs - Additive effects are theoretically possible, therefore patients may be at risk for increased bruising or bleeding.
Barbiturates - Additive effects are theoretically possible, according to an animal study.
Hypoglycemic agents - A hypoglycaemic efffect has been observed in animal studies
Immunosuppressants - Andrographis enhances immune system if you have an auto immune condition or take immunosuppressants do not use Androgrographis.
